It doesn’t seem to matter how good a particular motorcycle is, there are those among us who will always want their machine to be a little different – more noticeable perhaps, or exclusive. Well now they have a chance, but only while stocks last…
Thirty years have passed since the launch of the BMW R80G/S – the original and best adventure travel enduro. In the three decades since, this segment of the world market has grown tremendously and BMW, as a pioneer with each new model, has set the standard for a harmonious synthesis of off-road and on-road qualities.
Offering the unique combination of street, touring and off-road qualities, without the slightest compromise in everyday use, the original R 80 G/S paved the way as a brand new concept – the first genuine Adventure Sport motorcycle. Since then, riders all over the world have explored distant horizons and experienced life from the saddle of a variety of GS models, including the R100GS, R65GS, R1100GS, R850GS, R1150GS, R 1150GS Adventure, F650GS, F650GS Dakar, R1200GS, R1200GS Adventure, and F800GS.
The GS range is without any doubt the definitive choice for global circumnavigation expeditions and overland adventures, and has been an incredible success story for BMW Motorrad. Today, there is a choice of four ‘Gelande-Strasse’ (on/off-road) enduros in the current model line-up and to celebrate 30 years of this iconic go-anywhere motorcycle, BMW Motorrad is launching a limited-edition GS range.
These special edition “30 YEARS GS” models feature the celebrated BMW Motorsports colors of the legendary 1980s R80G/S Rally Raid machines that propelled riders such as Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier to victories in gruelling Paris-Dakar races, almost three decades ago.
As well as an eye-catching retro color scheme, each “30 YEARS GS” model has a range of additional features and equipment. Available in limited numbers only, each “30 YEARS GS” version of the BMW R1200GS, the R1200GS Adventure, the F800GS and the F650GS will be painted in Alpine White, with three-colored decals in the BMW Motorrad Motorsport livery.
The special-edition R 1200 GS will have a “30 YEARS GS” model designation on the tank, cross-spoke wheels with black hubs, hand protectors, tinted screen and a red seat with “GS” stamp. Its bigger sibling – the R1200GS Adventure – will also have the “30 YEARS GS” model designation on the tank but will come with extra-large hand protectors, an aluminium engine protection guard and a red/black seat with a “GS” stamp on it.
Those who prefer the parallel-twin power delivery of the F800GS will find the “30 YEARS GS” model designation on the airbox cover, hand protectors, an aluminium sump guard, a tinted screen, white indicators and a red seat with “GS” stamp. Fans of the BMW F650GS will find the “30 YEARS GS” model designation at the rear of this machine, which comes with magnesium-coloured cast wheels, hand protectors, an engine protector, a tinted, higher screen, white indicators and a red seat with “GS” stamp at the front.
The last time BMW Motorrad produced a special-edition GS was back in 2005, when a special edition R1150GS Adventure in alpine white and blue was launched to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the GS range. This was very popular and sold out in no time at all, and this is also expected to be the case for the latest 2010 “30 YEARS GS” models that pay tribute to the outstanding success and popularity of the GS concept.
As well as being the natural choice of adventure motorcyclists everywhere, anyone purchasing one of the limited-edition “30 YEARS GS” range of machines will be buying into part of BMW’s heritage. However, only those that are ready for adventure need apply – these bikes are for riding, not for collectors.
