BMW Motorrad Espana-supported team takes 1st and 2nd in front of more than 20,000 spectators at the opening round of the 2010 CEV (Campeonato de España de Velocidad) Spanish Championship.
It’s not only the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup where the S1000RR is enjoying victories, as the BMW Motorrad Espana-supported team recently enjoyed victory in front of more than 20,000 spectators at the Circuit de Catalunya in the opening round of the 2010 CEV (Campeonato de España de Velocidad) Spanish Championship.
As well as 125GP and Moto2 categories, BMW fans in Spain finally got to see the new S1000RR in action in their own national championship in the Stock Extreme race on April 18, where the Motorrad Racing Team of Xavi Forés and Enrique Rocamora were competing on the BMW S1000RR against a grid of riders on Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Ducati machines.
Having qualified on pole position on the Saturday, the main challenge to Xavi Forés in the Stock Extreme race came from Javier del Amor, with the two riders battling with each other for most of the race, until Forés began to edge himself ahead little by little on the BMW S1000RR. Meanwhile, his team-mate Enrique Rocamora was holding third position on his BMW, and when the unlucky Del Amor’s Ducati ran out of petrol on the final lap, Rocamora moved up to second place behind eventual winner and team-mate Forés, handing the Motorrad team a one-two in the opening round of this seven-race championship. The final podium spot went to Santiago Barragán on a Honda.
The team’s third rider, Alberto López, finished the race in a respectable eighth position, despite suffering with aches and bruising after crashing heavily during Saturday’s qualifying. His determined ride in difficult circumstances shows that he will definitely be one to watch in the forthcoming rounds of this exciting championship.
Commenting on this fantastic start in Montmeló for the BMW team from Madrid, a delighted Xavi Forés said: “I am very happy to get this result after all of the work that the team has been doing in the build-up to this race. It’s a new bike, a new team and new tires for me, so there were a lot of things to get used to, but we put in the hard work and it paid off.
“The victory might have seemed easy in the end, but there are some seriously talented guys out there, like Javi Del Amor, who put up a real fight. Thanks go to all the team for this victory, as well as our partners such as Michelin, Bitubo and BMW, who have all made a tremendous effort to get us where we are today. Now, my focus has to be on the next round at Albacete, where I am hoping for a similar performance,” said the rider from Valencia.
Having started their season in the best possible way with this double podium, the Motorrad Racing Team will continue working to improve and target more podiums and race wins for the BMW S1000RR, starting at the second round of the 2010 CEV on May 9th at the Albacete Circuit.
