Sponsored by BMW Motorrad Canada and the motorcycle riding improvement school Sécurité Active (division of Moto Internationale), the GS Challenge is a weekend of challenges, skill and dexterity where camaraderie and team spirit are a big part of this unique event in Canada and in North America. The GS Challenge is the second of its kind to take place over the world, the first one being held in Africa. Germany followed in its steps in 2008.
The idea behind it is as such: to allow motorcyclists, whether male or female, who ride 650cc or more BMW off-road bikes to surpass themselves in a series of courses where skill exercises must be executed. These are done in teams of three to develop mutual support and camaraderie. It is important to understand that this is not a race so the time factor is not taken into account. There are winning teams by courses and a grand individual winner. This year, the grand winner will earn a pass to become the third member of the Canadian team at the GS Trophy 2010 (a similar event where different countries compete which takes place in South Africa in November).
The last editions were such a success that it confirmed the intention to continue to develop this event which reunites motorcycle lovers. Last year, guests from Germany, Argentina and one team from Calgary participated. Presently there are nearly 50 very enthusiastic participants. In the medium-term, the goal is to turn this challenge into a key event for people here and to show the rest of the world what is done in Canada. In the long term, they want the GS Challenge to become an international event.
More than ever before, motorcycling in Quebec is now very much alive!
