BMW S1000RR Wins Australian Superbike Opener

In addition to hosting the first 2011 FIM Superbike World Championship races, Phillip Island, Australia also saw the running of the first round of the Viking Group Australian Superbike Championships. Glenn Allerton of Procon Racing dominated the field winning both races aboard his BMW S1000RR.

The damp track at the beginning of race 1 caused some racers to switch to spare bikes fitted with “wet” tires. Allerton, however, choose to stay with the slicks mounted to his BMW. While he had to ride cautiously during the first few laps, a dry line soon emerged. The 30-year-old was then able to pick off the other riders and by the fifth lap found himself in the lead after passing polesitter Wayne Maxwell who was struggling on deteriorating wet rubber.

Allerton rode to the checkered flag with over a 20 seconds lead. Proving the first victory wasn’t just a tire gamble paying off, Allerton won the second race in dry conditions by a solid margin. Two wins from two starts, on debut with a new team and race bike, has Allerton excited about his championship chances in 2011.

“This is the best start to a season I’ve ever had,” said an ecstatic Allerton. “The weekend really could not have gone better for us given we are a new team and racing a new bike. We made a good choice this morning on the slicks but in the second race showed that the pace was genuine.”

Teams are now heading to next week’s second round to be held at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania.
