BMW’s First Production Scooters Roll-Off the Assembly Lines

Mark December 1, 2011 as a special milestone in the history of BMW’s Berlin Spandau plant, as the first production scooters from BMW Motorrad rolled off the assembly lines. It was an historic moment that has been a long time in coming. The first public announcement of BMW Motorrad’s intention to enter the “Urban Mobility” segment came with the unveiling of the Concept C scooter at the EICMA fair in Milan, Italy in November 2010. The interest generated by this design study paved the way for the two production models – the C600 Sport and C650GT – which were also unveiled at EICMA only last month. An electric scooter, the Concept e, was shown at the Frankfurt International Motor Show last September and will lead to third scooter production model in the future.

On Thursday, December 1, at 11:00 CET, the first complete C600 Sport rolled off the production line, much to the delight of Andreas Müller, leader of the Maxi-Scooter project at the BMW factory in Berlin, who said, “It’s a really proud day for everyone involved with the Maxi-Scooter project. This day has been a long time coming for us but everyone has been working tirelessly behind the scenes in the build-up to today’s start of production. Our workforce and indeed the whole company is truly behind these exciting new developments for BMW Motorrad and is enthusiastic about our forthcoming entry to the Urban Mobility segment. We’re all looking forwards to seeing the first C600 Sport and C650GT machines out on the road from next March.”

On a dedicated production line, up to 78 Maxi-Scooters will be produced daily, with two shifts operating per day, five days a week. It currently takes around one-and-a-half hours to assemble a complete model. Interestingly, the Maxi-Scooters don’t share the rotating ‘hook’ conveyer system as the other BMW motorcycles assembled at Berlin Spandau but have a new, dedicated assembly line that allows quick and easy flexibility as production increases. The Berlin workforce has also played an active role in the development and set-up of the assembly line.

This is the second significant milestone to be celebrated in 2011 at the BMW plant in Berlin Spandau. Earlier this year, on Friday, May 6, the two millionth motorcycle left the assembly lines. The special anniversary bike – an R1200GS – was unveiled to a selection of VIPs and journalists before being offered as a raffle prize as part of a campaign to promote the city worldwide.

Today’s first Maxi-Scooter will not, however, be raffled off. It will be safeguarded by BMW Motorrad as part of its history. Advanced orders are already being taken for scooters to be delivered to customers in March 2012.

    What happened to the blue tires? That was the coolest thing about it. I would have gotten one if it looked like it did when they introduced it.

    It turned me off when I found out that only one headlight burns at a time giving it a burned out headlight look. I could accept the chain drive so they could get a couple of more horsepower to the rear wheel. But when I found out options such as Cruise Control and built in Sat. Navigation were not available, my interest in them dropped considerably. They don’t look much like the “Concept C” either.
