Year over year sales for BMW Motorrad were flat in April 2012 with the motorcycle division selling just 0.1% more vehicles worldwide — 13,088 versus 13,072 in April 2011. While not the increase we’ve been accustomed to seeing lately, it is still the second-best April sales result in their history. It also means in the first four months of 2012, BMW Motorrad sold 3.5% more, or 37,461 motorcycles worldwide compared to the 36,181 sold in the same period last year.
There is continued good news for BMW’s other motorcycle brand, Husqvarna. They delivered 918 motorcycles last month to its dealer network which is a whopping 52.2% more than the 603 in April 2011. Year to date, deliveries have grown 40.0% to 3,560 motorcycles compared with the 2,543 delivered in the first four months of 2011.
Hendrik von Kuenheim, the outgoing Head of BMW Motorrad said, “Despite difficult basic conditions and a very uneven development of the motorcycle market, BMW Motorrad achieved very good sales performance in April. Especially the markets of Germany, USA, France and Brazil have developed very positively. Strong demand for BMW bikes of all three series is constant. Our bestseller is still the big enduro R1200GS. Our large touring bikes with six-cylinder engines are also enjoying great popularity.”
On the automobile side, the BMW Group continued on its successful course as the world’s leading premium car company with an increase of 6.1% in April 2012 sales. A total of 145,505 (prev. yr. 137,195) BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand automobiles were sold worldwide last month.
