It’s another award for the new liquid-cooled 2013 R1200GS. This time the Australian Motorcycle News (AMCN) has named it “Motorcycle of The Year.” After two weeks of testing against a diverse group of motorcycles, the GS came out on top. This award comes just several months after the HP4 took the top prize in the magazine’s ‘Austest’, beating a strong line-up of the top ten best sports bikes available in Australia
AMCN gathered together the eight finalists and set about to compare them against each other using the judging criteria of design brief, relevance of features, value for money, build quality and innovative design approach. The GS was up against the Ducati Hypermotard, Honda F6B, BMW HP4, Moto Guzzi California Custom, Honda CBR500R, Triumph Street Triple R and the Aprilia Caponord.
For two weeks the AMCN test team compared the bikes on a variety of open road riding, such as the daily commute and carrying a passenger, and also tested the bikes on the dyno and even through a gymkhana course at Sydney Motorsport Park!
“To improve on the original GS, BMW needed to top each of the criteria categories, unwittingly positioning themselves for the AMCN Motorcycle of the Year win. They did that and therefore are the winners, despite ultra-stiff competition,” said AMCN. “This is a formidable machine, one that has all the bases covered and impressed all who rode it with its adjustability, versatility, ability to put a smile on your face and just plain do things a bike this big should have no business doing! Making such a big bike feel so light, agile and multi-faceted is an amazing achievement.”
Tony Sesto, General Manager BMW Motorrad Australia was excited to pick up the award. “It is a fantastic achievement for the R1200GS to be recognized by AMCN as the 2013 Motorcycle of The Year. In the first six months since its release, 19,083 GSs were delivered to very happy riders. It is the perfect motorcycle for Australia’s varying variety of riding conditions.”
