The newest issue of BMW Motorcycle Magazine is now out, giving readers the latest and best with new model launches, customized classic BMWs, road tests, product reviews and more. The 2013 Winter issue features the introduction of three of the coolest new models from BMW Motorrad — ever! — the unique BMW R nineT, the liquid-cooled 2014 R1200GS Adventure and the all-electric C evolution.
Created to commemorate 90 years of BMW Motorrad history with a classic roadster look combined with modern high technology. With the last of the air/oil-cooled boxer engines, the new BMW R nineT is designed to be customized with parts straight from the factory. Café racer or bobber, solo or two-up rider, there are many choices available to personalize this very special bike. We give you all the details and show you all the options.
Then check out the new beefed-up, liquid-cooled 2014 R1200GS Adventure just introduced at the EICMA show. It’s made to satisfy the “go-anywhere” globe trotter in all of us. Featuring the next generation boxer engine first seen on the R1200GS, the addition of a huge 7.9-gallon tank, taller screen, larger footpegs, and optional Pro riding mode with Enduro ABS and ASC, make this a long-distance and off-road wonder that will satisfy the most adventurous riders.
Our road tests this issue feature a true off-road, all-terrain challenge of the new F800GS Adventure over the rugged plateaus, streams and trails of Utah. With the addition of more than a dozen modifications over the standard F800GS, did it earn the “Adventure” badge? We’ll give you our opinions and show you why.
Another unique road test in the Winter issue is our “Naked Brawl” comparison of the BMW F800R and R1200R. These two unfaired roadsters have much in common but significant differences as well, and not just between the engines. Read about the contrast in comfort, handling and engine performance from our dyno before you judge by price alone.
The annual Gear Guide featured in Winter’s issue fills you in on what’s new for 2014 and what you’ll need in new apparel, gear and accessories. The last installment of our chronicle of BMW Motorrad’s history for this year’s 90th anniversary brings us up to the present “glory days” of 18 models in the current line-up including the futuristic all-electric C evolution scooter. Interviews with Rudi Probst and Fred Jakobs of BMW give us behind-the-scenes insight.
This issue’s ‘Garage’ section explains the newer CAN bus BMW electronics system and in ‘People’ we meet the unconventional adventurer, moto-journalist and TV personality Neale Bayly. The ‘Destinations’ section takes us to Cuba for the first US riders’ motorcycle tour since Castro took over this interesting, although communist, country.
A special section on Custom Boxers features four head-turners from Europe. The Blacksmith’s Hammer BMW looks like a 1930’s vintage hardtail and is named the R10, but is in reality a Bavarian fairytale built by a shop called Boxer Forge. Another custom beauty is what the French builder calls “hyper-modified.” We also have a light R65 that carries a surfboard and stole the show at Biarritz.
Another shop specializes in creating bobbers from BMWs is named, appropriately, Bobber Mania. They show off the “Bob/05” featuring a steely gray exterior and fat tires. And we also feature an elegant restoration of a 1953 R68 for a woman rider.
Events covered include the first Classic Boxer Sprint that gathered 32 sprint enthusiasts on their “spirit of the era” BMWs from the café racing scene of the ’60s, and included celebrity racers and customized bikes that all had a story to tell.
All this, plus “sound” advice on protecting your hearing, the latest racing news, opinions from columnists, a calendar of upcoming BMW motorcycle events, and more to read in the Winter 2013 issue! On sale now!
