BMW Motorrad has issued a recall through the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) for 2013 C600 Sport, C650GT, F700GS, F800GS, F800GS Adventure, F800GT, R1200R and R1200GS motorcycles for a defective side-stand safety switch. In their letter to NHTSA, BMW states, “Water may enter the side-stand switch preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.” And further “an unexpected shutdown increases the risk of a crash.”
BMW estimates that 100% of the 4453 affected units have this defect. BMW will notify owners beginning in April 2014 and replace the side-stand switch free of charge.
As an explanation BMW says that after a tooling change by their supply, Toyo Jiann Tsang Electric Co., LTD of Taiway, “the switch housing was not produced to specification. As a result, during vigorous washing of your vehicle, or riding in very wet conditions, it is possible for water to enter the side-stand switch. If this were to happen, it could prevent the engine from starting or in rare cases could cause the engine to shut-off without warning while riding, which could increase the risk of a crash.”
Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov. Refer to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V065000.
