From January to August 2014, BMW Motorrad sold a total of 90,226 motorcycles and maxi scooters, thereby achieving a new all-time high — up 7.6% over the 83,890 units sold last year. However, August’s sales of 7,587 vehicles was down 1.6% compared to last year’s exceptionally strong figure of 7,708 units.
Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad Head of Sales and Marketing, “Eight months into the year we are doing very well. 90,226 vehicles sold between January and August is a new record for this period. Our highly attractive product portfolio and the strength of the brand BMW are key factors here. We remain firmly on course to set a new all-time sales high for the entire year of 2014.” Faust adds, “Customers can again look forward to numerous new products for the 2015 motorcycle season. We will be presenting no less than five models to the public in the course of the next few months.”
As many as three new BMW Motorrad models will see their world premiere at the international motorcycle trade fair INTERMOT the beginning of October. In addition to the new models, BMW Motorrad also will present its new rider equipment collection for the upcoming season at the trade fair in Cologne. Two more new models will be presented to the public for the first time two weeks later at the international motorcycle trade fair EICMA in Milan.
“INTERMOT is one of the biggest motorcycle trade fairs in the world and provides the perfect setting for us to present our new models,” says Heiner Faust. “Here we will be showing the new BMW S1000RR for the first time. Trade fair visitors can also look forward to two other world premieres as well as numerous highlights at our trade fair stand. So our model offensive continues to advance at full pace.”
BMW Motorrad USA reported sales of just 1,101 motorcycles in August, a decrease of 6% from the total of 1,171 motorcycles sold in August 2013. USA sales remain up 5.1% for the year however. The R1200GS was once again the brand’s best selling model with 135 units sold in the month and with the new for 2014 R1200GS Adventure and R nineT also featuring strongly, R-Series sales increased by 7% over 2013 with 398 bikes delivered compared to 372 a year ago. Thanks to improved availability of the HP4, S-Series volumes grew by 57% with 231 units delivered compared to 147 last year.
The BMW Group saw its most successful August ever with 145,902 vehicles delivered to customers around the world (prev. yr. 139,650 / +4.5%). Sales for the first eight months of the year are also higher than in any previous year with a total of 1,330,077 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles sold, an increase of 6.7% over the same period in 2013 (prev. yr. 1,246,502).
In August, worldwide sales of BMW brand vehicles increased by 6.2%, with a total of 126,152 vehicles delivered to customers (prev. yr. 118,744). Year-to-date sales climbed 9.5%, totaling 1,151,904 units for the first eight months of the year (prev. yr. 1,051,567). Sales of MINI brand vehicles decreased in August with a total of 19,504 delivered to customers worldwide (prev. yr. 20,654 / -5.6%). Sales for the year-to-date, which have been affected by the MINI Hatch model-change, are down 9.0% on the same period last year (175,658 / prev. yr. 192,968).
