The Spring issue features a GS blow-out! Three new GSs are covered, starting with BMW’s new hard-core R1200GS Rallye, road tested over Iceland’s formidable terrain. The new R nineT Urban G/S is then introduced, paying homage to legendary Paris-Dakar racing bikes. Finally, the new G310GS is presented. Made in India, it’s compact, lightweight, and best of all, sells at under $5,000!
Two more road tests of new 2017 models follow. Channeling Steve McQueen, there’s no denying the cool factor in BMW’s new R nineT Scrambler. And the inaugural U.S. ride of the G310R will surprise with its 350 pounds of roadster-fun.
Euro4 changes and how they affects all 2017 models are analyzed with a road test of an updated 2017 R1200R. Recent motorcycle shows reveal the HP4 Race prototype, BMW’s most exclusive model with frame and wheels made of carbon fiber. Upgrades to the F800R and GT are covered as well.
Five innovative customs are featured, showing what’s possible when starting with a BMW base bike. A K100RS undergoes a turbo-diesel conversion, an R80RT becomes a dazzling café racer, and a K100LT is transformed into a modern Thunderdome racer. Cutting down an R100RS and an R80GS produce amazing and unique one-offs.
Tested in the Gear section is BMW’s new large Softbag 3, the solution for bikes without a case option. Also covered are the additions to the BMW apparel collection for 2017—from leathers, boots and gloves, to an entirely new range of jeans—as well as many other new products on the market.
The Garage section presents step-by-step directions on adjusting valve clearances on water boxers. The Skills column focuses on avoiding crashes when in traffic situations. And the Destinations section describes an early spring route through Death Valley, Nevada.
