If you’re interested in BMW motorcycle road tests, then this issue has you covered—from the latest models to underappreciated (and now more affordable) discontinued tourers to the wrap up of a long-term fleet bike.
First up, the completely new BMW F850GS and F750GS are tested on- and off-road to see how they compare to each other as well as the previous generation. Has the design of these middleweights changed for the better or have compromises been made? After the dust has settled, the conclusions may surprise you!
Next, the verdict is in on the BMW S1000XR “superbike on stilts.” After a full year racking up more than 12,000 miles from the magazine’s stable, we find out why its service and maintenance history make it “almost inconspicuous from BMW’s perspective.” There are also comparison tests of tires, seats and exhaust systems that owners will want to check out.
Next, a replay of BMW K1300GT and K1200GT road tests are featured for Gran Turismo fans. You may think they are overshadowed by the K1600 series but these four-cylinder, long-distance tourers have the performance, technology and comfort today’s riders want. Only now, they can be bought at bargain prices.
But that’s not all that can be found in the summer issue, there’s also custom bike inspiration. The “anti-retro” R nineT featured on the cover, with its inspired medieval armor styling, is ready for the city streets of Beijing, China. Another unique build, the South African Skyway airhead, delivers all the same fun as the freestyle BMX bicycle the builder admired as a teenager. And a third custom is from Germany, where its supercharged K1100 engine was built just for fun at wheelie competitions.
The Gear section tests nine gauntlet gloves along with an introduction to the construction and materials used in manufacturing them. The latest and greatest helmet from Shoei is also tested—the Neotec II—along with its own made-to-fit, Bluetooth communications system from Sena. For ladies, Rev’it’s Horizon 2 Adventure jacket and pants are also reviewed.
For this summer’s Destinations, check out nature’s splendor across the pond in Ireland for the Wild Atlantic Way, as well as in our U.S. backyard along the Denali Highway in Alaska.
Bringing readers up-to-speed, race championship season openers featuring the double-R are covered along with news of the upcoming GS Trophy competition in Mongolia and the return of the revered BoxerCup series. Plus new tire offerings from Dunlop, Metzeler and Bridgestone, a calendar of upcoming events and more exciting BMW news can be found in the Summer 2018 issue.
