National S1000RR Racing Updates

BMW S1000RR teams continue to enjoy success in their national race series. The BMW teams in the hard-fought International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) were once again particularly impressive. After dominating the season-opener at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz circuit, they scored a victory and more podium finishes at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben May 5-7.

In race one in Oschersleben, no fewer than six RR riders finished in the top seven. Erwan Nigon (FRA) of Team Van Zon-alpha Technik BMW and Jörg Teuchert (GER) of the Wilbers-BMW racing team finished second and third to join victorious Yamaha rider Matej Smrz (CZE) on the podium.

Teuchert’s teammate Gareth Jones (AUS), Troy Herfoss (AUS/RAC Racing BMW), Michael Ranseder (AUT/Technogym Racing Austria-Fritze Tuning) and Gisbert van Ginhoven (NED/RAC Racing BMW) occupied places four to seven to complete another strong performance by the BMW riders.

The RR crossed the finish line in first place in race two: Nigon won, ahead of Smrz and Australian Honda rider Karl Muggeridge. Places four to seven were once again reserved for BMW: Jones, Teuchert, Ranseder and Herfoss finished just outside the top three. Keep a lookout for an extremely fast female riding the RR in the IDM. Twenty-two-year-old Lucy Glöckner from Nordhom is currently in 13th place in the points after two top six places at the opening round, and a 14th at Oschersleben.

In the IDM Superbike Rider’s Championship, Teuchert leads with 72 points, ahead of Smrz (70 points) and Nigon (66 points), six of the top seven places are occupied by RR riders. In the Manufacturers’ Championship, BMW (155 points) was able to extend their lead over second-placed Yamaha (78 points) to a huge 77 points.

The British Superbike Championship traveled to Oulton Park (GBR) for three races. The performances of Tommy Bridewell (GBR) from the Supersonic BMW team was particularly impressive: the 23-year-old presented BMW with the first top-five finishes in this fiercely-competitive championship. On the #46 RR he finished fifth in two races and seventh in the third. Bridewell climbs to seventh place in the Riders’ championship. The Italian Supersonic BMW team is making its debut in the BSB this season.

The Infineon Raceway in Californian Sonoma (USA) hosted the North-American AMA Pro Road Racing championship on the same weekend. The best-placed BMW rider was Larry Pegram (USA) of the Foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing team, who finished ninth and tenth on his RR.
