BMW Motorrad Wins MCN, Pirelli and OttoCar Awards

A Record Five MCN Awards for BMW Motorrad

BMW Motorrad is celebrating after being presented with a record five MCN Awards, the most the manufacturer has ever received in one year. The awards from the UK’s Motorcycle News honored BMW for Manufacturer of the Year, MCN Bike of the Year (BMW R1200GS), Adventure Bike of the Year (BMW R1200GS), Sportsbike of the Year – unlimited capacity (BMW HP4), and Scooter of the Year (BMW C600 Sport).

“BMW’s surge into the affections of UK riders has been unstoppable over the last three years, adding great sales success to constant innovation. The new R1200GS, HP4, F800GS Adventure, C-series scooters and K1600GT Sport represent a busy year of introductions, while the stunning Concept Ninety wowed the entire motorcycle community,” remarked MCN.

Praising the new R1200GS, MCN said, “There is no getting away from the fact that the new GS instantly comes over as being a class above its rivals. The GS is one of the world’s most recognizable bikes. A popular choice for world adventurers, weekend riders and commuters alike, the GS underwent its biggest redevelopment for 2013.

“Headlining this is the first water-cooled BMW boxer motor, but this shouldn’t overshadow the other innovations and updates: notably the most versatile traction control package we’ve ever had on a bike. It works to seamlessly support all levels of off-road ability, but also adds a faultless safety net to road riding. The multi-mode package is further supported by a highly effective (optional) electronic suspension system, making the GS superbly versatile.”

The 2013 BMW HP4 won the ‘Best Sports Bike (Unlimited)’ Award, with MCN saying, “Already a firm favorite of the MCN road test team, the 2012 S1000RR was so good that it seemed impossible to improve upon – and then BMW unleashed the HP4 version, blowing its own class leader aside as the ultimate evolution of the asymmetrically-faced superbike. It doesn’t just rule, it dominates this class of extreme performance.” In the four years that BMW Motorrad has been making sportsbikes, BMWs have taken this award three times.

The BMW C600 Sport was named ‘Best Scooter’, with the judges saying, “Not content with taking the sports bike and adventure bike headlines, BMW’s diversification into the scooter market has also delivered a winner at the executive end of the market. The two petrol versions are now joined by the C evolution electric scooter, too.”

Adrian Roderick, General Manager for BMW Motorrad, said, “To have the Motorcycle News panel of judges praise the pioneering work of BMW Motorrad as ‘Manufacturer of the Year’ is welcome recognition of how far the BMW brand and model range has developed in recent years as we celebrate BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary in 2013. In every sector of the market that BMW Motorrad enters, we strive to offer premium products that lead the way in innovation, technology and rider safety.

“It is a real honor to have the R1200GS named both ‘Bike of the Year’ and ‘Adventure Bike of the Year’. Replacing a motorcycle as universally loved and successful as the last air-cooled GS was a huge challenge. But the motorcycling public and the judges at MCN have recognized that the new GS is an even better motorcycle; one which, despite all the imitations and challengers, remains the benchmark for its class.”

BMW R1200GS named ‘2013 Pirelli Bike of the Year’ in South Africa

With just two months on the local market, the BMW R1200GS has been named the 2013 Pirelli Bike of The Year in South Africa. The announcement took place during the official opening of the AMID Motorcycle Lifestyle Show in Nasrec, South of Johannesburg. Sponsored by Pirelli and involving 13 members of the South African motorcycling media as well as professional motorcyclists, the competition pitted 16 new-for-2013 motorcycles against each other for the overall title. The judges voted for their top six bikes – best first – and then points were awarded in the order 10, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 for first to sixth place. These points were totaled and then a winner declared.

Pirelli Bike of the Year 2013The competition’s judging process took part over two days in Gauteng. Day one was at Midvaal Raceway and a track venue was used – not to see how fast the bikes could lap the circuit – but as a controlled environment where each member of the judging panel could ride every bike and assess it over the same piece of tarmac. Day two saw the bikes being ridden on the open road from the Vaal dam to Magaliesburg where a 10km loop of open roads had been marked out for further assessment.

“We are very delighted to receive this accolade. The BMW GS concept has embodied riding pleasure and the desire for adventure for over 30 years and the new R1200GS is living up to that legacy with its new technology and overall features,” said Rob Holder, General Manager of BMW Motorrad in South Africa.

BMW Motorrad’s Tim Diehl-Thiele, who was at the award ceremony in Frankfurt along with marketing colleagues and agency representatives said, “We’re very proud to win these important awards, especially as we’re competing against many large automobile companies with a lot more power and bigger budgets than we’re working with.” It’s a fantastic result and these awards offer reward and recognition for everyone behind our various campaigns, from my BMW Motorrad team to our agencies, who work closely with us across all the communication platforms. With many more exciting products, events and activities on the horizon, we’re hoping to be back here in 2015 to celebrate even more success.”
