BMW Motorrad Sells 100,000+ Vehicles Through September 2014

BMW Motorrad worldwide sales reached a new all-time high of 100,217 units sold through the first three-quarters of this year — the first time in history BMW has topped 100,000 vehicles through September. Last year, BMW Motorrad sold 93,154 units through September 2014, making this year an increase of 7.6%. It was just a few short years ago that BMW was announcing record sales by topping 100,000 units for the entire year. September 2014 alone saw a 7.8% increase in motorcycle and maxi scooter sales to customers — a total of 9,991 vehicles were delivered in September 2014 compared to 9,264 units last year.

The 2015 R1200RS was one of three new models introduced last week that BMW says will help maintain sales momentum next year.

BMW Motorrad expects to remain on course for growth in the upcoming season with the introduction of several new models. Last week, three new models were presented at the Intermot motorcycle trade fair in Cologne, Germany — R1200R, the R1200RS and the S1000RR. More than 200,000 visitors to the trade fair were able to see the two new water-cooled boxer models and the new supersports bike. Two more new models are expected to be unveiled at the international EICMA motorshow in Milan, Italy at the beginning of November.

Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad Head of Sales and Marketing said, “For the first time in the history of BMW Motorrad we have supplied more than 100,000 vehicles to our customers in the first nine months of a year. This is an increase in sales of 7.6% as compared to the equivalent period last year.”

BMW Motorrad recorded retail growth in almost all sales regions during the first nine months of the year. Germany remains the most important single market (BMW Motorrad is once again the market leader there) with 17,068 vehicles sold and a market share of just under 25%. It is followed by the USA, Italy, France and the UK in sales.

The R1200RT was the best selling model in the US in September.

BMW Motorrad USA reported sales of 914 motorcycles in September, a decrease of 4.3% from the total of 955 motorcycles sold in September 2013. BMW Motorrad USA is still 4.3% ahead of last year through first nine months and expects sales to pick up this Fall as new 2015 models are now arriving in dealerships in quantity. With the “stop ride” and recall of the R1200RT behind them, the RT was the best selling model with 207 units sold in September. The new-for-2014 R1200GS Adventure and R nineT were strong sellers as well, helping R-series sales increased by 40% over 2013 with 444 bikes delivered compared to 318 a year ago. The new S1000R naked superbike helped grow S-series volumes by 40% with 168 units delivered to customers in September compared to 120 last year.

For the BMW Group, overall sales of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles have continued to grow, making it thier best ever September. A total of 199,799 vehicles were delivered to customers, an increase of 5.3% on the same month last year (189,664). The first three quarters of 2014 were also the most successful in the company’s history. A total of 1,529,880 vehicles have been sold in the year-to-date, up 6.5% compared to the same period last year (prev. yr. 1,436,166).
