GS Trophy 2016: 114 BMW R1200GS Motorcycles Set Sail for Thailand

The 2016 BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy may be almost three months away, but the 114 identically-prepared R1200GS motorcycles participants will use (and 14 R1200GS Adventure bikes for the event marshals) have set sail for Thailand. They left the BMW Motorrad headquarters in Munich, Germany and will take around 40 days from leaving port in Hamburg to arriving at the destination port of Laem Chabang, Thailand.

GSTrophy16-SetSail-10For the fifth time, BMW Motorrad has invited GS riders from around the world to take part in national qualifying rounds which have led to the formation of 19 teams, including for the first time one team made up solely of women. These teams will take part in the International GS Trophy competition which is comprised of several daily legs and numerous special stages. Taking place from February 28 to March 5, 2016 in the exciting landscape of Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand, participants will test their mental and physical conditioning over seven days on and off their two-wheeled machines.

The R1200GS motorcycles – which are already well equipped in their standard configuration – have been modified in order to master the extreme conditions that they will be exposed to in the course of the GS Trophy. Selected Original BMW Motorrad Accessories make the bikes even more resistant to the stresses and adversities typical of the GS Trophy that exceed the usual norm. Examples of these are the aluminium enduro engine guard and steel crash bars. Moreover, the safety screw for the oil filler neck and the headlight guard are taken from the Original BMW Motorrad Accessories safety program.

As for ergonomics and comfort, an adjustable footbrake lever and wider enduro footrests, which support riding while standing, have been added. The modification package is rounded off by the Metzeler Karoo 2 off-road tires.

The necessary equipment will soon be in place to ensure the International GS Trophy 2016 – with its unique combination of adventure, exotic cultures, new friendships, jungle, sand and dust – remains an off-road rally that is simply one of a kind.
