BMW Motorrad continued its run of record global sales in April with deliveries up 1.4% (16,793). A total of 50,581 BMW motorcycles and maxi-scooters have been delivered to customers around the world so far in 2016 (+5.5%). Volatility continues for BMW Motorrad USA, however, which saw sales decrease 26.3% in April with 1,244 motorcycles sold compared to the 1,689 sold in April 2015. This comes after a 19.6% year-over-year sales increase for March 2016 which had temporarily brought this year’s sales above 2015 levels. After April, year-to-date sales are down 8.2% — 4,420 units solid in first four months of 2016 compared with 4,787 in 2015. BMW Motorrad Canada reported April sales of 260 units marking a decrease of 17.5% compared to April, 2015. Year-to-date, the brand has sold 631 units, an increase of 12.3% over the same period last year.
In April, a total of 179,285 BMW Group automobiles were delivered to customers around the world, an increase of 1.9% on the same month last year. Sustainable growth is reflected in the year-to-date figures, with a total of 736,931 BMW Group vehicles sold in the first four months of 2016, 4.9% more than in the same period last year.
BMW brand sales achieved a new April sales high with a total of 150,542 vehicles delivered to customers worldwide, an increase of 1.1% compared with the very high sales of the same month last year. The brand’s year-to-date figures stand at 629,325 deliveries, an increase of 4.8% on the previous year. Customer deliveries of MINI vehicles in April totalled 28,441 worldwide, an increase of 6.3% on the same month last year and a new record for the month. Year-to-date sales of the brand rose 5.6% to 106,753.
Europe continues to be a strong growth driver for BMW and MINI sales, with deliveries in the first four months of 2016 totalling 341,195 units, an increase of 9.9% compared with the same period last year. Almost all markets in the region have achieved sales growth in the year-to-date, with double-digit increases recorded in several markets including France (27,784 / +12.2%), Spain (17,884 / +20.6%) and Scandinavia (17,491 / +14.4%).
Year-to-date deliveries of BMW and MINI vehicles in Asia increased by 6.2% compared with the same period last year, with a total of 234,463 units delivered to customers in the region. In Mainland China, deliveries rose 6.0% (162,221), sales in South Korea climbed 15.6% (19,550) and deliveries in Japan rose 6.7% (22,936).
In the Americas, year-to-date sales of BMW and MINI vehicles are down 8.1%, with a total of 138,033 units delivered to customers. Total sales of 111,199 in the USA are 10.1% down on the same period last year, as supply to the market is currently being rebalanced in order to take account of increasing demand for SAV models. Deliveries in Canada are up 9.3% (13,197) and sales in Mexico in the year-to-date rose 7.1% (9,766).
