BMW Motorcycle Magazine, Winter 2017 Issue Now Out!

Winter is a time to tinker in the garage, rethink what gear worked or didn’t this past season, and best of all, plan for new adventures to come. The Winter edition of the BMW Motorcycle Magazine has all this covered. If you’ve been thinking of buying a new motorcycle in the new year, this issue includes two road tests of new motorcycles sure to be popular in the retro scene—and they couldn’t be more different.

The new BMW K1600B “bagger” stretches its six-cylinder legs in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina. No doubt it’s a long and low beauty, but can the 740-pound machine carve through the twisties as well as eat up freeway miles in comfort? Next up is the newest addition to BMW’s Heritage line of two-cylinder boxers, the BMW R nineT Urban G/S, designed to conquer city streets and country roads. The Winter issue answers the question of whether this new “G/S” is a true enduro successor to the iconic 1980s BMW R80G/S.

If you’d rather design your own perfect ride, there are three custom machines featured to inspire your creativity. An S1000-powered XR/GS enduro takes on the notorious Erzberg Rodeo for off-road racers. The rare 145hp HP2 Sport boxer adds a sidecar for a physically-challenged rider who wants to rip up racetracks and backroads. Finally, an airhead is transformed into a stunning retro bobber with Springer fork, knobby tires and a chromed Heinrich-style tank.

News from Germany brings readers spy photos of a new middleweight BMW F750GS. Reportedly this 2018 model, as well as it’s F850GS sibling, have a new engine, chassis, and revised fuel tank with new looks similar to BMW’s R1200GS.

Details on the recalls of two of BMW Motorrad’s most popular models, the R1200GS and R nineT, are covered along with explanations and instructions to ensure your safety.

The latest in innovative ideas is featured in the Gear section, including hand guards that can be adjusted for weather conditions, brake lights activated by deceleration, an electronic bridge to convert an audio system to earphones, a snap-in helmet communications system, LED lighting upgrades, and more.

The Garage section shows us upgrades to get the most out of BMW’s inexpensive R nineT Scrambler model making a difference in performance and style. For the S1000-series, there are step-by-step directions for valve adjustment maintenance.

The popular Skills column digs deeper into the science behind controlling your machine. Then readers are introduced to two riders in the People section: a stunt girl who amazes audiences on her S1000R, and an F800GS rider describes his adventures halfway through an around-the-world journey.

For Destinations, this issue highlights not one but two epic journeys. The first is to an off-road event in Australia, followed by crossing the world’s largest sand dune desert. The second is to the Himalayas along the exotic borderlands of Nepal and India. And for those who prefer a technically challenging road in the US, the Palomar Mountain Loop of southern California is also included.

All this, with up-to-date racing results, a calendar of upcoming events and more exciting BMW news can be found in the Winter 2017 issue!
