To mark the 80th anniversary of the iconic 1936 BMW R5, BMW Motorrad has created a homage custom motorcycle appropriately called the BMW Motorrad R5 Hommage. Being shown now at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2016 in Italy, this one-off special model features a 500cc two-valve boxer engine damaged while racing and restored by motorcycle enthusiast Sebastian Gutsch. The technical highlight of the engine is the supercharger which brings output up to the historical standard of 26 hp. The styling was hand-crafted by respected builders, Ronny and Benny Nore, based on sketches by the BMW Motorrad Design Team. All parts such as the frame, fuel tank and rear fender are unique creations by the Noren brothers’ as were missing parts for the engine and gearbox. The paint is classic BMW, black with white pin striping. But it’s a modern interpretation with a metallic, slightly flaked paint and a “smoke” finish allowing some of steel to show through.
