While new motorcycle sales remain abysmal overall, BMW Motorrad continues its growth trend with its worldwide sales up 18.1% in August 2010 compared to August 2009. This shows an overall growth of 18.5% for the year compared to the previous year. BMW Motorrad sold 6,405 motorcycles in August 2010 (an increase of 982 versus 2009) and 73,442 for the year up to the end of August (prev. yr. 62,001).
This growth in a tough market has allowed BMW to increase its market share in the above-500cc motorcycle market in many places. In Germany, market share rose from 18.8% to 23.6%. Currently, BMW Motorrad’s market share is near 20% in these other markets: Italy (18.8%), Spain (18.8%), Belgium (21.1%) and the Netherlands (18.9%). Top of the market share list is South Africa at 38.6%.
On the four-wheel side, BMW Group (which includes MINI and Rolls-Royce) reports strong sales as well. Here’s a quick glance at the results:
