The water-cooled GS is finally here! This revolutionary motorcycle was launched at this year’s Intermot show in Germany and features the latest generation boxer engine from BMW. Our Winter issue brings you all the news from specs to tech to design. Through tables, diagrams and timeline, the progress from oilhead to hexhead to camhead to today’s wethead boxer engine is analyzed along with what this means for future BMW motorcycles.
Speaking of the future, we road test the “production-ready” C evolution electric scooter around the city streets of London during the Olympics. Read our impressions as well as comments from a few lucky celebrities who had their chance to ride the future Beemer. We also check out what’s next, with rumors of a smaller GT tourer, an SUV-like S1000 and an S1000 roadster coming soon.
More road tests of new and updated 2013 models are packed into the Winter issue as well. The incredible HP4 gets put to the test on the track to see if it’s the new king of the superbikes. The original water-cooled GS twins, the F700GS and F800GS, are tested side-by-side. And rounding out our reviews is our K1600GT long-term tester with results of over 10,000 miles on the clock.
For those who prefer a more low-tech, lightweight, personalized blast of fun, a special scrambler section introduces the work of five custom BMW shops who like to play in the dirt. Their made-to-order machines reflect owners’ wide ranging vision of the perfect bike.
In the Garage this issue are tips everyone needs to know on replacing brake wear items, as well as a tutorial from an expert on the full restoration of Bing carburetors. The Gear department brings us BMW Motorcycle Magazine’s annual ‘New Gear for a New Year’ guide, just in time for readers’ holiday wish lists. Destinations with maps for this issue include a look into the old French fur traders route around Lake Superior in Canada, and a trip down a harrowing old mining road in Utah.
Columnists provide a lighter side of riding with articles on the Caveman Brain and The Weaker Sex (with a question mark!) and BMW Motorcycle Magazine’s grease monkey gets to tinker with Chris Pfeiffer’s own F800R stunt bike.
All this, plus a BMW-powered amphibious vehicle, the exciting WSBK race results, GS Trophy qualifiers from around the globe and the annual GS Safari in Australia, are in this latest issue.
