BMW Motorrad Sales Dip in June but Remain Up for the Year

The big news for BMW as we pass the halfway point in the year, is that they have sold over one million automobiles—more than ever before in the first six months of a year. A total of 1,020,211 vehicles were delivered to customers worldwide, an increase of 6.9% over the same period last year (954,501). Sales in June also reached an all-time high with deliveries increasing 4.8% to a total of 193,342 vehicles (prev. yr. 184,489).

Sales of the new 2014 R1200RT with ESA are held up waiting for replacement parts for the defective rear shock.

The news for BMW Motorrad is both good and bad. They sold 70,978 motorcycles and maxi-scooters in the first half of the year world wide (prev. yr. 64,941). Which is good news as it represents a new record and an increase of 9.3%. The bad news is that June sales dipped 5.7% to 11,827 vehicles (prev. yr. 12.541). BMW didn’t provide any explanation for the decline but it may be due, in part, to the inability to sell the new ESA-equipped R1200RT motorcycles due to the defective rear shock absorber.

Update: Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad Head of Sales and Marketing says, “We have achieved an all-time six-month high in the first half of this year. Never before have we sold this many vehicles in the first six months of a year. With an increase of 9.3 % in the first half of 2014, we remain on course to achieve an all-time sales high for the year as a whole.”

The best-selling model remains the BMW R1200GS. Almost 15,000 units sold worldwide during the first six months of the year. This is followed in second and third place by the two new boxer models, the R1200GS Adventure and R1200RT with 9,708 and 7,420 units respectively. The R nineT launched in March apparently surpassed expectations with sales totaling 4,114.

BMW Motorrad USA reported sales of 1,327 motorcycles in June, a decrease of 3.4% from the total of 1,374 motorcycles sold in June 2013. The R1200GS was the brand’s best selling model with 190 units, helping drive growth of 7% in R-Series models with 517 boxer deliveries in June compared to 482 in June of last year.  With 290 sales compared to 202 last year, S-Series performance increased by 44% with the HP4 up 168% in the month with 58 deliveries compared to 22 in June of 2013. BMW Motorrad USA continues to perform ahead of last year, up 8.2% after six months.

Worldwide sales of BMW brand vehicles in June climbed 7.3% to total 164,214 units (prev. yr. 153,075). Since the start of the year, 886,347 BMWs have been delivered to customers worldwide – an increase of 10.2% (prev. yr. 804,227). As expected the recent model change means overall MINI sales continue to be down on last year with a total of 131,896 deliveries in the first six months of the year (prev. yr. 148,799 / -11.4%). In June, 28,738 MINIs were delivered to customers (prev. yr. 31,102 / -7.6%). Sales of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in the first half of the year totaled 1,968 units (prev. yr. 1,475 / +33.4%).

In line with its strategy of balanced global growth, the BMW Group made gains in all three major sales regions in the first half of 2014. In Asia, the BMW Group has delivered 321,915 BMW and MINI brand vehicles in the year to date, an increase of 18.3% on the same period last year (prev. yr. 272,100). Several markets in the region experienced double-digit growth in the first six months of the year including South Korea, where a total of 21,972 BMW and MINI vehicles were delivered to customers (prev. yr. 18,412 / +19.3%) and mainland China, where sales rose 23.1% in the first half year (225,035 / prev. yr. 182,800).

The Americas recorded steady growth in the first six months of 2014 with overall sales of BMW and MINI vehicles up 3.4% (220,764 / prev. yr. 213,473). In the U.S., sales rose 5.1% with a total of 181,534 deliveries so far this year (prev. yr. 172,787). Sales in Mexico were up 6.2% (6,803 / prev. yr. 6,406) in the same period.

BMW Group sales in Europe are also positive with total deliveries of BMW and MINI vehicles increasing by 2.1% to 445,808 units (prev. yr. 436,460) in the first half of this year. In June, customer registrations in the company’s home market Germany are up 2.4% (26,100 / prev. yr. 25,485).
