BMW Motorrad Sees Double-Digit Growth in May 2013

BMW Motorrad had a successful May with global sales climbing 14.2% to 13,081 vehicles (prev. yr. 11,457) — an all time high for the month of May. In the first five months of 2013, BMW Motorrad increased sales by 7.1% to 52,400 (prev. yr. 48,918) motorcycles and maxi scooters.

Sales of the new F800GT help boost May sales to a record high.

“We have achieved our best May result to date with double-digit growth as compared to the previous year,” said Heiner Faust, Head of BMW Sales and Marketing. “We are currently 7.1% above last year with an all-time first-quarter high in 2013, a record in April and a very strong May. While we are pleased to say that the very difficult markets of Southern Europe, Italy, Spain and France are showing very stable sales results, we are seeing especially good growth rates in the overseas markets of North and South America, Asia and Russia. Germany — our strongest single market — is also seeing a positive trend in spite of the unfavorable climate situation. The main driving force behind this development is provided by our new models, the BMW R1200GS, BMW F800GT and BMW HP4 as well as our maxi scooters, of course. We are anticipating another powerful stimulus from our new travel enduro, the F800GS Adventure, which goes out to dealerships in mid-June.”

BMW Motorrad USA reported sales of 1,809 motorcycles in May, an increase of 61.1% from the total of 1,123 motorcycles sold in May, 2012. This is an all time record for the month of May for the North American subsidiary as well besting the previous record set in 2005 by nearly 170 units. F-series sales, boosted by the introduction of the new F800GS Adventure and F800GT, grew by 66% compared to May 2012 with 353 units compared to 212 units last year. Growth in K-series, up 24%, came from the 6-cylinder K1600GTL and GT but it was the all-new water-cooled R1200GS boxer that lead the way in May with 360 units delivered to customers, driving growth of 42% in R-series models.

Sales of the new 2013 BMW R1200GS are leading the way in the USA.
